María Irene Fornés

 

María Irene Fornés is the author of more than two dozen works for the stage. Among her most celebrated plays are PROMENADE, THE SUCCESSFUL LIFE OF 3, FEFU AND HER FRIENDS, THE DANUBE, MUD, THE CONDUCT OF LIFE, AND WHAT OF THE NIGHT?, ABINGDON SQUARE, ENTER THE NIGHT, THE SUMMER IN GOSSENSASS, and OSCAR AND BERTHA. Ms Fornés is the recipient of nine Obie Awards, one of which was for Sustained Achievement in Theater. She has received N E A awards, including a Distinguished Artists Award, Rockefeller Foundation grants, a Guggenheim grant, an award from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters and a NY State Governor's Arts Award. She conducts playwrighting workshops in theaters and universities in the U S and abroad. From 1973-79, she was the managing director of the New York Theatre Strategy. Besides directing most of her own plays, she has directed plays by Calderon, Ibsen, Chekhov and several contemporary authors. Two volumes of her plays have been published by the Performing Arts Journal and other plays have appeared in various anthologies. She recently completed a TCG/PEW Artist-in-Residence at Women's Project and Productions. The 1999-2000 season at Signature Theatre Company was devoted to the Fornés oeuvre, which includes the world premiere of her latest play LETTERS FROM CUBA. This production garnered her a 2000 Obie Award for her writing and direction.
