ROSMERSHOLM

Henrik Ibsen

A transitional work, bringing to a close the series of socially committed plays, begun in 1977 with PILLARS OF THE COMMUNITY, and inaugurating a new phase in Ibsen's dramatic career, fully expressed by THE LADY FROM THE SEA, which followed ROSMERSHOLM in 1888, and unwaveringly maintained until his final work, WHEN WE DEAD AWAKEN, in 1899. In Ibsen's later plays the focus shifts from the representative type, actively engaged in political and social relationships, to the unique individual, acted upon by private fears and desires, with an inner life of indescribable complexity, revealed only in glimpses.
