In 1989, Rivera attended a writing workshop at the Sundance Institute lead by
Columbian novelist Gabriel García Márquez. Grants and awards include a National
Endowment for the Arts grant, Rockefeller Foundation Grant, New York State
Council for the Arts grant, Whiting Foundation Writers Award, and a Fulbright
Arts Fellowship in Playwrighting. On the Fulbright, Rivera was a
writer-in-residence at the Royal Court Theater, London.
Rivera's television experience includes co-creating and producing the critically
acclaimed N B C series
Eerie, Indiana and P.O.W.E.R.: the Eddie Matos Story for H B O's
Life Stories series (nominated for a 1995 Cable Ace Award for Best Children's
Program). Rivera's films include
Riding the Comet, a 3-D IMAX film for Sony Pictures.
Rivera's latest play is SUEÑO, an adaptation of Calderón de la Barca's LIFE IS A
DREAM, scheduled for February 1998 at the Hartford Stage Company. He is a member
of the Mark Taper Forum's Mentor Playwrights Program and the board of directors
of T C G.
