José Rivera

 

José Rivera's plays include THE HOUSE OF RAMON IGLESIA (winner 1983 F D G/C B S New Play Contest, Ensemble Studio Theater, broadcast on American Playhouse), THE PROMISE (Los Angeles Theater Center, Ensemble Studio Theater, published by Broadway Play Publishing Inc), EACH DAY DIES WITH SLEEP (Circle Repertory Theater and Berkeley Rep), MARISOL (1992 Humana Festival at the Actors Theater of Louisville, Joseph Papp Public Theater, winner 1993 Obie Award for Outstanding Play), CLOUD TECTONICS (1995 Humana Festival, Playwrights Horizons, published by Broadway Play Publishing Inc), 187 (Naked Angels), MARICELA DE LA LUZ LIGHTS THE WORLD (commissioned by Seattle Children's Theater), GODSTUFF (52nd Street project), and THE STREET OF THE SUN (Mark Taper Forum, recipient 1996 Kennedy Center Fund for New American Plays grant).

In 1989, Rivera attended a writing workshop at the Sundance Institute lead by Columbian novelist Gabriel García Márquez. Grants and awards include a National Endowment for the Arts grant, Rockefeller Foundation Grant, New York State Council for the Arts grant, Whiting Foundation Writers Award, and a Fulbright Arts Fellowship in Playwrighting. On the Fulbright, Rivera was a writer-in-residence at the Royal Court Theater, London.

Rivera's television experience includes co-creating and producing the critically acclaimed N B C series Eerie, Indiana and P.O.W.E.R.: the Eddie Matos Story for H B O's Life Stories series (nominated for a 1995 Cable Ace Award for Best Children's Program). Rivera's films include Riding the Comet, a 3-D IMAX film for Sony Pictures.

Rivera's latest play is SUEÑO, an adaptation of Calderón de la Barca's LIFE IS A DREAM, scheduled for February 1998 at the Hartford Stage Company. He is a member of the Mark Taper Forum's Mentor Playwrights Program and the board of directors of T C G.
